Well the co pilot and I are heading to Tassie for a Holiday in a weeks time.

Just looking for any members in Tassie or that have been there before with information on what to see and where to go.

Plans are a bit up in the air at the moment with the fires but still planning on going.

Scott,

I did the Tassie trip end of January last year.Get off the ferry and turn left and just ride. probably the best place I have ridden. Also, make sure you do the tour of Port Arthur as it is excellent and a great insight into how tough it was back in the early days.

If you do a lazy 400kms per day you will see everything and have an easy trip.

I just hope there is a Tasmania still there for you after the horrendous fires they are experiencing at this time. Our thoughts are with our Tassie mates.

Below is a link to a discussion on the Canberra Riders Forum about route options when riding around Tassie.

Link
Some good advice from motorbike folk who have either done the trip before or are originally from Tassie.

Cheers

There is a thread in this section about 20 under yours, titled Dongara WA to Tasmainia from a former member (Calveitro) of his ride to and around Tassie and back that may be some help to you.

Well that was a ride that will not be forgotten.... just got home from our trip to Tassie.
17 days and 4590kms, we managed to see and meet a lot of great people in Tassie.
I will put up pictures and a bit of a run down on what happened as soon as we get sorted.

Never been to Tassie but would love to, can't wait to see your pictures. What would be the best time of year to go ?
or doesn't it really matter, I've got a trip from the east side of Au ( Gippsland in Vic ) to Perth & back later this year,
but really must do a Tassie trip soon, glad to hear you both had a good trip.
Ps, what were the costs to get bike & two people over the water ?.

Hi Max
Sorry I'm a bit slow getting everything done having trouble getting my map of the trip to load.

As for the best time late January was good, there were only a few Motorhomes and no Grey Nomades towing caravans. They start in mid February from what people told me.

Anytime from November to April -March sounded Ok from what people I spoke to before going said, we did January because of Lydia's work.

The cost for The Spirit of Tasmania is not a set price it can change from one day to the next until you book your tickets. It cost us $89.00 each way for the bike,we travelled overnight to Tassie had a cabin with port hole $250.00 each, return trip we were day passagers $109.00 each.

Hopefully this all works.
The ride to Melbourne was slow due to bushfires near Nowra then rain on and off to Lakes Entrance.
|Tassie Map>Link
We arrived at ferry terminal at 5pm only to wait 1 hour to start loading ,we just chatted to people while we waited. One person it turned out was a Tassie motorcycle cop returning from holidays with his family, we left him a very happy man as his wife was very impressed with how comfortable Lydia looked on the Storm and he now has her on side to buy one in the future. The bloke riding in front of us was riding home with a broken leg after a trip over the handle bars near Horsham.

The crew tie the bikes down using ties that hold the front brake on. When you reach the other end you untie your own bike.

The trip over was good, slept all night with just a very gentle rock till arriving in Devonport. From Devonport we headed west along the coast road to Burnie then onto Stanley, a quick ride up on the chain-lift to the top of The Nut for some photos, lunch, then a walk through some shops and a ship repairs shop. Leaving Stanley we headed to Arthurs River before returning to Somerset for the first night, one thing that was clear very early on was the lack of other traffic everywhere you go.

You still have to do a travelogue for the other 11 .
Sounds interesting , I am sure the boys will be wanting to hear more.

We left Somerset for Cradle Mtn, the road was great riding through the twisties of Hellyer Gorge to Waratah, a quaint little old mining town.Had a cuppa in the local coffee shop, great view of waterfall, and got a full rundown on the area from the shop owner & locals, she was a very friendly lady.

From there we rode to Cradle Mtn these roads were good to stretch the legs of the Storm on, Cradle Mtn has fuel but at $2.05 a litre your better off going with sufficient fuel for the round trip, eg fill up at town 20min before the mtn.
If you are into walking this is a great place, we did a couple of short walks then went to the lodge for lunch.
Then onto Rosebery, Zeehan with a great museum stopping for the night at Strahan on the West Coast. Strahan was one of the few places that had limited accommodation. Up to this point roads brilliant, good sealed rds, nice rounded corners and no cops.
